This CAST took up the challenge
of playing in complete repertory with each other.
Over the 2 week run
each performance was
a different combination of
2 actresses in each of the 3 lead roles...
which has made it very difficult
to organize a single slide show as I did with
Baby With the Bathwater
Therefore- here are my

Desdemona had the benefit of a wonderful company of Players who provided
a lovely opening ambience as well as an evocative soundtrack throughout the performance. Thank you to Samantha Thompson,
our Musical Director, for her many hours in consultation and rehearsal,
as well as the students who joined us from the School of Music--
thank you all for the outstanding contribution you made to the production.

Desdemona: daughter to a powerful Venetian Senator, married to Othello, the black general of Venice's army, living in Cyprus, living in a time when women were property, decoration, unimportant.
She speaks with a clipped RP British accent--
Emilia: the ignorant self-righteous wife of Iago (whose evil plots will bring about the tragedy) has spent her life as a servant in the Senator's household in Venice, she is 10 years older than Desdemona.
She speaks with an Irish accent--
Bianca: the town 'Madame', the typical 'whore with a heart of gold', she owns a house of ill repute, which Desdemona visits for fun and adventure.
She speaks with a thick Cockney accent--

We will work organically with music throughout the rehearsal process to create the soundscape for the piece.
Ideally our musical troupe will be Desdemona's Players . . .
this is the perfect song I think for Scene 4-- Desdemona's dance.

a Balagan use of music- at the edge of the light- commenting- supporting- The Shipping News, below is a sort of example, using celtic drums and over produced strings- but we'll be teasing out a dialogue- a similar juxtaposition- Using African drums with Renaissance melodies and voices singing softly in harmony.
Here's a tutorial created for A-level students studying Shakespeare's play--
Dealing with the philosophical question of the Madonna/Whore--
More interesting insight into the original play and the characters we must know well-
And we mustn't neglect the discussion of rascism and inter-racial marriage-
Here a lovely, modern portrayal of Desdemona as she is understood from Shakespeare as seen in the most recent film, which can be viewed in its entirety below-
This is the archetype Vogel is working against in order to raise the question:
Is it only a tragedy if Desdemona is a true and faithful wife?-
Is violence against women acceptable if the woman is a slut?-
