Welcome to Acting III --
And as 3rd year students, welcome to upper-class status and responsibility-- fair warning, the bar has been raised and a higher caliber of work, both your practical presentations and your written exams and essays, is now expected. I suggest you form a study group for discussion of the reading material as soon as possible. You are more likely to really understand the work conceptually if you spend time together discussing the articles assigned than by trying to work through them entirely on your own.
By now you should have embraced your inner child and
learned to play and be responsive (1st year) and learned the techniques
demanded of truthful, living-the-part-on-the-stage acting (2nd year)
so by the 3rd year Semester 1
you are ready to learn to be a more pro-active agent of the theatre, how to embrace style pieces, period pieces, absurd, expressionistic, or symbolic theatre, and how to make theatre to address social injustice. You will also research in depth the theories and methodologies of the great visionary directors of the 20th Century who forged new paths for their work and have in the process changed the institution, training practices, and staging methods of theatre in the modern age.
In Semester 2 we will try to apply those elements
as we tap our own imaginations (with workshops by outside artists and theatre professionals)
to put it all to work in a Laboratory whose objective is the
development of a distinctly Caribbean theatre, both in process and product.
We will try to take great risks and learn from both success and failure, critically reflecting
and analysing our process, our audiences' responses, as well as our own evaluation of the theatre we create together. Students will be required to
show their ability to communicate effectively
both verbally and in writing.
First Assessment is TUESDAY 24 Sept at 3pm in Studio I
the GREEK CHORUS
